Intensive Care Bereavement Project

The intensive care bereavement project is a series of Modules which are one component of the multi-component bereavement intervention developed for the purpose of the “ICU BEREAVE” study co-led by Dr. James Downar and Dr. Brandi Vanderspank-Wright. The modules provide guidance for understanding and supporting families in acute grief and outlines practical strategies to sensitively intervene. The modules are relevant to ICU clinicians at all stages of their career from students to veterans. In addition to improving understanding of grief in an ICU context and ways in which clinicians can affect it, the modules highlight ways to address difficult scenarios with family members before and after a patient dies.

Canadian Virtual Hospice has launched MyGriefToolbox.ca, a series of online learning modules, co-designed by paramedics, to support and improve the practice of paramedics who support dying and grieving Canadians. MyGriefToolbox.ca was developed by Canadian Virtual Hospice with investment by Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement and in partnership with the Alberta government; Emergency Medical Services, Alberta Health Services; Nova Scotia Health Authority Cancer Care Program and Nova Scotia Emergency Medical Services. The modules were developed in response to successful pilot projects in Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island that identified the need to support paramedics who encounter death and dying regularly in their profession and the grief they may experience themselves. MyGriefToolbox.ca helps meet those needs.

The nine modules on MyGriefToolbox.ca were developed with grief experts including Dr. MacKinnon as well as Canadian paramedics. The modules provide guidance for supporting patients and families at end of life and in grief, strategies for managing work-related grief, and specialized content to assist families and friends support paramedics.

Available in both French and English and made in partnership with the Canadian Virtual Hospice amd its pan-Canadian partners,  MyGrief.ca is an online support for people working through grief and loss or supporting someone who is grieving. MyGrief.ca is also an educative tool for those working in health care. It complements existing community-based grief supports and helps address the lack of grief resources available, particularly in rural and remote regions. Unique in the world, MyGrief.ca was developed by a national team of researchers, educators, health care providers and family members who have “been there.” Funding was provided by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer.
